Want to experience the freedom of climbing without all the gear? Bouldering was initially a way of training towards roped rock climbing but has now developed into a fully fledged sport. It involves unroped climbing on walls up to 12 foot high protected by a crash mat. This allows climbers to practice extreme moves unhindered by harnesses & without the consequences of getting it wrong. Equipped with just a chalk bag & climbing shoes, fun but extreme moves can be practiced & perfected in relative safety.
These safety precautions are replaced with spotters and crash pads.

By eliminating the complex rope systems, bouldering allows you to focus on movement skills alone, which promotes confidence, strength and camaraderie among friends. Embracing bouldering and all it has to offer can be one of the fastest roads to overall improvement for any climber. Topics include:
....... • Safety and avoiding injuries
....... • Spotting techniques
....... • Movement skills specific to granite bouldering
....... • Psychological skills for bouldering success

Arizona is one of the premier bouldering destinations in the Southwest and hosts hundreds of boulder problems to suit all levels. This course, taught by our experienced guides, is designed to introduce you to the beautiful world of Arizona bouldering and help get you started on the right foot.

This course is designed to expose students to the sport of bouldering, while teaching a variety of climbing techniques, mental and physical preparedness, proper spotting and other areas of climbing safety. All bouldering equipment is included (climbing shoes, chalk bag and crash pad - we rent daypacks if needed). This course is held at Camelback Mountain.

hi mark and staff!
How's it going?
I'm doing great. I had a few bruises and scrapes that I didn't notice until later but they're minor! The worst part was leaving Arizona! It was very cold here last week!
I had a great time on the course and even when you convert it to Canadian dollars it was money well spent! I've started looking into some clubs around here... the end of my hockey season is fast approaching. I thought your instruction was great and I definitely had a lot of attention! Chuck was also great at giving tips and moral support. There really isn't anything I would change about the course!
Thanks!!!

health benefits of climbing:
For a rock climber, reaching the top is not the point. Like rearing children, rock climbing is the journey that matters most if you are climbing for fitness.
Whether their journey lasts two hours or two days, rock climbers can benefit from a mental workout as well as a physical one, according to competitive climber Michelle Hurni, president of the Colorado-based American Sport Climbers Federation (ASCF). Physically, rock climbing burns fat while strengthening muscles if pursued at a vigorous pace. Mentally, rock climbers exercise their ability to focus fully on a single task, an increasingly rare occurrence in this age of multitasking. Climbers also get practice confronting their fears- the fear of heights, the fear of falling, the fear of equipment failure. Ultimately, the sport can improve your self-confidence - if you learn how to climb safely, that is.

how many calories will rock climbing burn?
Ascending a natural rock wall burns up to 700 calories an hour if you weigh 140 pounds or up to 974 calories an hour if you weigh 190 pounds. Rock-climbing sessions tend to last at least six or seven hours.

further advantages:

In addition to offering an anaerobic and aerobic workout, rock climbing exercises almost every muscle group, according to Hurni of the ASCF. Rock climbing two or more times a week improves your strength, muscular and cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and mental toughness.
